Today is World Rhino Day and to spread the message UK conservation group Save the Rhino has launched a national social media campaign using nail art and the hashtag #NailIt4Rhinos.

The campaign was inspired by the connection that humans and rhinos share; keratin. Keratin is the protein that is found in fingernails, but also rhino horn, the main reason that these amazing animals are being hunted to extinction. At the start of the 20th Century the were 500,000 rhinos across Africa and Asia. By 1970 their number had fallen to 70,000 and today it stands at around 29,000. This means that we have lost nearly 95% of the world’s rhino population.

The illegal trade in rhino horn, seen as a status symbol in countries like Vietnam, is being driven and organised by criminal gangs who are heavily armed. These gangs are a threat not only to the rhinos, but to the rangers and local communities that are helping to protect the animals and save the rhino species.

In 2014, 1,215 rhinos were killed in South Africa alone, that’s one every eight hours. 749 have also been killed so far this year. If this rate continues, we could lose all of the world’s wild rhinos in the next 11 years.

Here at Save the Rhino we work to save all five endangered rhino species, so this year we’re asking you to make a stand for rhinos by decorating your nails and showing the world you care by using the #NailIt4Rhinos hashtag! If we can’t save rhinos what hope is there for other species in the world?‘ Susie Offord, Deputy Director for Save the Rhino

Save the Rhino has teamed up with Barry M for this campaign and they will be sending out lots of hints and tips for you to gain inspiration from so you can join in this campaign too. ‘We are more than happy to support the #NailIt4Rhinos campaign as it’s for such an important cause. At Barry M we love cosmetics but we also love animals too, beauty with compassion is at the heart of our company, the same compassion we see at Save the Rhino.‘ Lorraine Clough, PR Manager for Barry M
